Chapter Fourteen

“Let me get the door,” Bailey said as Joshua carried Andrea up the few steps to the front entry.

Holding the door, she stepped back to allow Joshua room to move and went out to the car to gather Andrea’s things. Bringing in the blue suitcase, Bailey rolled it into the modified dining room that would be Andrea’s until the home renovations were over. Andrea had told Michael that was the first priority.

Joshua gently placed his mother on her bed, which they had moved from upstairs. He thought, she looks so small in the king size bed, especially without Dad beside her.

“Can I get you something, Mom? Water? Tea?”

“Some water would be nice, dear.”

Joshua nodded and walked out through to the kitchen, barely glancing at Bailey. Andrea noticed something was off between them when they came to the rehab center to pick her up, but she didn’t say anything until now. “Bailey is everything okay?”

“Yes, Andrea, of course. You’re home now.”

“Yes, I am and I can see something’s wrong. Out with it!”

Sighing, Bailey said, “I’m not sure. Apparently, your son thought I was taking money from you or causing you to spend more of your own. He didn’t realize that I’d actually invested into the catering business and wasn’t just a partner in name only.”

Andrea bristled, “It wouldn’t matter if you hadn’t invested. None of it is his business, anyway.”

Bailey walked over and hugged Andrea, “Thank you, but it’s okay. I understand his feelings a bit better now. I would’ve been mad too if I thought someone was taking advantage of you. He was just protecting his mom.”

“Bales, I don’t need protecting.”

Smiling at the woman who felt more like a mother than a business partner, Bailey said, “Family sticks together. I get that.”

“Hmmph. Well, no one asked my opinion.”

Patting her hand, Bailey said, “Let me go check on Joshua. He couldn’t have gotten lost getting your water. There’s only one door between here and the kitchen.”

Handing Andrea the book she was reading in the hospital, Bailey watched her settle down and went to find where Joshua was hiding. They hadn’t spoken since she stormed off yesterday and even though they had been at the center all morning waiting for Andrea to be released, neither seemed to be able to look the other in the eye. After I stormed off and had time to think, I could see things from his perspective.

Rounding the kitchen corner, she saw Joshua standing at the sink staring out at the barn. “Joshua? Are you okay? It’s taking a bit to get the water for Andrea and I was worried.”

“I’m sorry, Bailey. Truly sorry. I don’t know what came over me, first questioning my mother’s business and then assuming you were some con-artist.”

He turned to face her, and Bailey could see the anguish in his dark green eyes. It’s like looking at the forest in Colorado Springs, Bailey thought.

“Joshua...”

“Please say you’ll forgive me and will give me another chance. I don’t deserve it, but I promise I won’t be the jerk you’ve met until now ever again.
